Dahon urban utility folders are known for their folding speed and compactness, and are ideal if you live in an apartment and/or commute to work. Some of the reviewed models have been discussed below.

The Boardwalk is a classic-styled, single speed bike that is one of Dahon’s bestselling urban commuters. It is priced quite reasonable and features a classic design that should appeal to the style conscious. It is the workhorse of the entire range, with a heavy yet rigid frame for extra stability. It is highly durable and can withstand most falls without any parts getting damaged. For a lighter, more portable bike, you will most likely have to shell out more money, but for a reliable, comfortable commuting experience, the Boardwalk is quite ideal.

The Eco C6 is another affordable bike from Dahon and is ideal for those on a budget. It folds quickly and easily, like all Dahons. It isn’t as heavy as the Boardwalk and has a 6 speed drive system, unlike the Boardwalk’s single speed. This makes it a breeze to ride on moderately hilly terrain. The only major downside to the Eco C6 is in the seat which gets a little hard over long distances. Switching the seat is recommended for a softer ride.

DoubleLok feature is standard on every Dahon bike

The Jack 26-Inch is a mature commuter with serious go-anywhere capabilities. The 26” wheels provide excellent handling while the folding mechanism makes the bike compact for easy storage. The aluminium frame is strong but lightweight and thoughtful features like the integrated pump and the puncture resistant kevlar belting around the tires make the Dahon Jack a value purchase. The downside to 26” tires is that the Jack is not as portable as smaller wheeled folders. Also, though it is advertised as a mountain bike, the Jack is primarily an urban commuter and will make riding around town a hassle-free and pleasurable experience.

The Mariner D7 has been designed for the boater of today. It features a polyurethane coating that is highly resistant to rust, an ever present danger in the ocean. It has a 7 speed drive and is one of the lightest steel-frame bikes around (27 pounds). On the flip side, some customers have complained about having to inflate the tires frequently. This may result from over inflating or under inflating the tires. Always be sure to inflate up to the recommended range.

The Speed Uno is a fun to ride folder that features coaster braking and weighs only 24 pounds. It is compact and can be easily folded for space saving storage. It may not be the most practical bike for commuting – the coaster brakes may be considered to be juvenile by serious riders – but delivers oodles of fun, and, being a Dahon, is a high quality product.

Every model is state-of-the-art

Dahon has always led the way in research and innovation and boasts of one of the finest R&D teams in the business. Some of the important technologies that the bike maker is credited with are listed below.

  • The Vector frame platform was introduced in 2011 to decrease the folding size and increase strength.
  • The Autolok  technology for increased safety.
  • The BioLogic II frame geometry was introduced in 2006 and has quickly become the norm on small wheeled folders. The new technology aids in stability and makes handling less twitchy.
  • Sonus Tubing for increased torsional strength. The new frame is 35% more rigid than the older oval tubing.
  • The Joe Murray design is a collaboration with legendary mountain biker and designer Joe Murray to develop frames for the Dahon mountain folders.
  • The Magnetix  technology was developed in 2003 and is an intelligent system that uses magnets to hold the Dahon bikes together when they are folded.
  • The DoubleLok feature is standard on every Dahon bike. It incorporates a double lock on all the folding latches for maximum rider safety.
  • The BioLogic FreeDrive is a unique technology that protects the rider from chain grime and dirt spray. It moves with the chain, eliminating friction and reducing chain vibration. It combines the looks and cleanliness of a belt drive and the efficiency of a chain drive.
  • Dahon has tied up with Schwalbe to develop a 406 mm version of the top of the line Schwalbe Marathon Supreme Tires. These are highly resistant to damage and have enhanced wet grip. They are also significantly lighter than other touring tires.

Dahon bikes are reliable and hi-tech bikes that mirror the company’s ‘customer-comes-first’ ethic. Whatever your biking needs, there is probably a Dahon folding bike for you. Every model is state-of-the-art and features some truly world-class engineering. This consistent innovation has led to Dahon becoming one of the world’s leading folding bike manufacturers and no folding bike buying decision is complete without properly going over the Dahon catalogue.
